The safest bet when it comes to oil will always be to use the kind of oil your lawn mower manufacturer recommends in the operator or engine manual for your particular mower. While SAE 30 motor oil is commonly recommended for lawn mower engines, each engine manufacturer’s recommendation may be unique and might include recommendations based on your local climate. For these reasons, it is best to follow the advice as specified in your manual.

Can I Use Motor Oil in My Lawn Mower?

If the engine manufacturer’s operator manual recommends 10W-30 or 10W-40, the same motor oil types used in vehicles, then these can also be used in your lawn mower.

Do You Mix Oil with Gas in a Mower?

Residential walk behind lawn mowers that are currently being manufactured most likely have 4-cycle engines. In these engines, gas and oil go into separate reservoirs on your mower. You DO NOT mix them together! If you are unsure whether you have a 2- or 4-cycle engine, please consult an authorized service dealer in your area to verify.

For example; one engine may instruct you to screw the dipstick all the way tight, while another may instruct you to only set the dipstick into the reservoir without twisting in tight. This varies by engine manufacturer. Some manufacturers have “no-oil change” engines, which means you Just Check and Add™ as needed. Generally, it is recommended to change your engine oil following the first five hours of mow-time, and then at least once every spring or summer mowing season or every fifty hours of operation, whichever comes first.
